On looking back through previous cold cases, Hole comes to realise that he is on the case of Norway's first official serial killer, as he discovers more women who have disappeared and are believed to have been abducted or murdered in a similar way. His experience of an earlier training course with the FBI leads him to search for links between the cases, and he finds two – each victim is a married mother and after each murder a snowman appears at the murder scene. The main plot is set in 2004, when Norwegian detective, Harry Hole investigates a number of recent murders of women around Oslo. The significance of the scene only becomes clear near the end of the book, where – as with other flashbacks in the Harry Hole books – it provides a clue to the identity of the book's real villain. A married woman has sex with a lover in the middle of the day, while her adolescent son waits in a car outside their lovemaking is disturbed when they think somebody is looking at them from outside the window, but it turns out to have been only a tall snowman. A brilliant thriller with a pace that never lets up, The Snowman confirms Jo Nesbø's position as an international star of crime fiction. The book begins in 1980 (24 years before the main part of the novel). For the first time in his career Harry finds himself confronted with a serial killer operating on his turf, a killer who will drive him to the brink of insanity.

When a second woman disappears Harry's suspicions are confirmed: he is a pawn in a deadly game. As Harry and his team delve into unsolved case files, they discover that an alarming number of wives and mothers have gone missing over the years. Inspector Harry Hole is convinced there is a link between the disappearance and a menacing letter he received some months earlier. Round its neck is his mother's pink scarf.
